RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of diode lasers at different wavelengths and power settings in handmade incisions in periodontal pockets and in oral mucosa of porcine tissue considering thermal damage, necrosis and the affected area of the soft tissue. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Combining the following laser wavelengths, 445nm, 532nm (KTP), 810nm, 980nm, 1064nm and 1470nm, and a power range from 0.5W to 2.0W in a continuous wave mode (CW), we made handmade incisions in porcine periodontal pockets and oral mucosa. After histological processing, we measured the area of lost tissue, the area of thermal damage and the area of necrosis. Then, we performed ANOVA to evaluate the difference between groups and two-way ANOVA to identify the influence of the laser-type variables and the power on the results. RESULTS: We applied an ANOVA test to evaluate the results, where statistical analysis showed clear differences between the 1470nm and 810nm laser groups that refer to thermal damage and necrosis in the periodontal pocket surface. Regarding the oral mucosa surface, the 1064nm laser showed differences in the analysis of lost tissue. According to the applied power, all the variables we studied (lost tissue area, area of thermal damage and necrosis) showed higher values when using a power of 2.0W instead of 0.5W. CONCLUSIONS: According to our results, the 810nm diode laser for oral soft-tissue biopsy using power ranges between 0.5W and 2W would be the best choice to avoid thermal damage in peri-incisional margins.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to evaluate the resection of hyperplastic lesions on the buccal mucosa comparing the 532nm laser (KTP), versus diode 980nm laser, considering pain, scarring, inflammation and drug consumption that occurred postoperatively with each lasers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study of consecutive series of 20 patients in two groups that presents hyperplastic lesions on the buccal mucosa. The choice of the KTP laser or diode 980nm laser for the surgery was made randomly. The power used was 1.5W in both groups in a continuous wave mode with a 320 µm optical fiber. Parameters of pain, scarring, inflammation and consumption of drugs were recorded by a Numerical Rating Scale and evaluated postoperatively. These recordings were made the day of the surgery, 24 hours after, 14 and 28 days after. RESULTS: Pain and inflammation was light - moderate. The consumption of paracetamol was somewhat higher in the diode 980nm laser versus the KTP laser after 24 hours, although data was not statistically significant; significant differences were found after 28 days in regards to pain (p = 0.023) and inflammation (p = 0.023), but always in the absence parameter so we find no pain in both lasers. Scarring in the two types of laser showed no differences along the visits, with not detected scar retractable. CONCLUSIONS: Although there is a slight histological difference regarding the KTP laser in the oral soft tissues for clinical use, both wavelengths are very suitable for excision of oral fibroma.

RESUMO

The levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) were determined in house dust samples collected from 22 residential houses located in different areas of Germany. Nine houses were located in an urban and industrial area, one house in a rural and 10 houses in a contaminated residential area near to a former metal reclamation plant. Two house dust samples were collected from two old farm houses, in which large amounts of pentachlorophenol (PCP) containing wood preservatives had been used several years ago. All dust samples were collected from the dust bags of vacuum cleaners and passed through a sieve (mesh: 2.0 mm). Particles < 2.0 mm were used for analysis. The average level of PCDD/F in "normal" house dust was 101 ng I-TEq/kg (range: 7.83-332 ng I-TEq/kg). The predominant congeners and chlorohomologues were OctaCDD followed by HeptaCDD, HeptaCDF and OctaCDF. The average level of PCDD/F in house dust samples collected from a contaminated residential area was 265 ng I-TEq/kg (range: 29.9-1050 ng I-TEq/kg). When compared with "normal" residential houses significantly increased levels of lower chlorinated PCDD/F were noted in the house dust samples from this area. The house dust samples collected from a PCP-treated old farm house were found to contain 1.39 and 11.8 micrograms I-TEq/kg. The chlorohomologues patterns were typical for PCP contaminated with PCDD/F. The present study shows that the levels of PCDD/F in house dust may be used as indicators of indoor contamination by PCDD/F and as reference values for further investigations.

RESUMO

The Box and Block Test, a test of manual dexterity, has been used by occupational therapists and others to evaluate physically handicapped individuals. Because the test lacked normative data for adults, the results of the test have been interpreted subjectively. The purpose of this study was to develop normative data for adults. Test subjects were 628 Normal adults (310 males and 318 females) from the seven-county Milwaukee area. Data on males and females 20 to 94 years old were divided into 12 age groups. Means, standard deviations, standard error, and low and high scores are reported for each five-year age group. These data will enable clinicians to objectively compare a patient's score to a normal population parameter.

RESUMO

The primary purpose of this study was to establish clinical norms for adults aged 20 to 75+ years on four tests of hand strength. A dynamometer was used to measure grip strength and a pinch gauge to measure tip, key, and palmar pinch. A sample of 310 male and 328 female adults, ages 20 to 94, from the seven-county Milwaukee area were tested using standardized positioning and instructions. Right hand and left hand data were stratified into 12 age groups for both sexes. This stratification provides a means of comparing the score of individual patients to that of normal subjects of the same age and sex. The highest grip strength scores occurred in the 25 to 39 age groups. For tip, key, and palmar pinch the average scores were relatively stable from 20 to 59 years, with a gradual decline from 60 to 79 years. A high correlation was seen between grip strength and age, but a low to moderate correlation between pinch strength and age. The newer pinch gauge used in this study appears to read higher than that used in a previous normative study. Comparison of the average hand strength of right-handed and left-handed subjects showed only minimal differences.

RESUMO

Twenty-seven college women participated in a study to evaluate the reliability and validity of four tests of hand strength: grip, palmar pinch, key pinch, and tip pinch. Standardized positioning and instructions were followed. The results showed very high inter-rater reliability. Test-retest reliability was highest in all tests when the mean of three trials was used. Lower correlations were shown when one trial or the highest score of three trials were utilized. The Jamar dynamometer by Asimow Engineering and the pinch gauge by B&L Engineering demonstrated the highest accuracy of the instruments tested.
